Emotional Intelligence and Nursing What is emotional intelligence? What does it have to do with nursing? Why do we care? In this paper I will be discussing what emotional intelligence is, why it is so important, functions of its use in nursing practice, how it can be used in my own practice to lead, and lastly how my views on leadership have changed. Most importantly though I will be discussing the application of emotional intelligence and its parts to nursing. After reading this paper, there should be a clear understanding as to why emotional intelligence is so important in terms of being a leader and becoming a great nurse. Daniel Goleman, the author of Emotional Intelligence is a well known writer and psychologist. His book was first published in 1995. Chapters one and two of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 written by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves, discuss what emotional intelligence is and why it is so important. According to the authors, â€Å"Emotional intelligence is your a bility to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships† (Bradberry Greaves, 2009). As if that wasn’t enough to help you fully understand the importance of emotional intelligence, Bradberry and Greaves (2009) also found that emotional intelligence influences almost everything someone says and does (Bradberry Greaves, 2009).
